Mel Milgate is a proud Bourke local whose deep commitment to community, culture, and regional development has shaped a diverse and influential career. As the Manager of Economic Development at Bourke Shire Council, Mel oversees a broad portfolio including community engagement, economic development, tourism, events, and library services. She also leads major visitor assets such as the iconic PV Jandra Paddle Vessel and the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition & Information Centre, playing a key role in strengthening Bourke’s visitor economy and celebrating the region’s unique heritage.
Before joining local government, Mel worked within the NSW Aboriginal Land Council network across the Northern Region, contributing to community development, governance support, and enhanced engagement with Local Aboriginal Land Councils. She also brings valuable experience from the hospitality sector and has an extensive background in media and communications, beginning her broadcasting career at just 13 years old.
Mel is driven by a passion for storytelling, regional leadership, and community empowerment. She remains dedicated to showcasing the strengths of Bourke, promoting opportunities across Western NSW, and ensuring the region’s stories continue to be heard.
